Twelve years ago in Japan a game was released in arcades called Monkey Ball. The premise was simple: instead of controlling the game’s main character (or characters since you could choose from three different monkeys) you actually used the banana-sha...

If there's one thing to be said about the Monkey Ball series, it is that you know what to expect every time you pick up a new iteration. The gameplay is always the same, and even if there's a singular new feature to check out (like using the touch scre...

When Nintendo's senior director of corporate communications, Charlie Scibetta, said the 3DS would help quash the perception of the company as a haven for casual gamers, I think we're safe to think he wasn't using Super Monkey Ball 3D as an example. Old...

When it comes to recent Nintendo handheld launches, Sega is always present and accounted for. When the DS launched, Sega had the mini-game collection ready and waiting. Now, for the 3DS launch, Sega has prepared . It’s a pretty solid release. You’ll c...
Technically getting three games in one (action/puzzle, kart racer and fighter), visually impressive, controls very easily and good for gamers of all ages. There are download-play versus options, so you only need one cartridge. Monkey Race mode is surprisingly fun.
Error message can come up when you suspend the game. Motion controls are awkward and take a lot of getting used to. You can’t use motion controls and have the 3D effect on. Monkey Fight is only fun with other people playing. No online multiplayer.

Super Monkey Ball isn't a series I've had much love for since the Gamecube days, specifically with SMB 1 and 2. Once SEGA went past that point, they kind of went off track, tossing in various mini-games, motion mechanics, easier difficulty, and overall...

The problematic relationship between the 3D and the motion controls is just the start of Super Monkey Ball 3D's woes.Super Monkey Ball 3D is, in some ways, Nintendo's worst nightmare. While it's a perfectly serviceable 3DS title that does a fair job of...
Tiltandroll mechanic is plenty fun with the 3DS accelerometer.
3D does not play nicely with the motion controls; Monkey Race and Monkey Fight modes are very boring knockoffs of Mario Kart and Smash Bros; some courses aren't terribly fun to negotiate with the accelerometer.

Back in 2003, I picked up a Nintendo Game Cube on launch day along with four titles: , , and . Out of the four, became my favorite. The game was great, but it appears Sega let the success of the title go to their heads. In less than a decade, the gam...
Super Monkey Ball 3D continues the trend of the franchise’s downward spiral. The game looks and sounds great, and Challenge Mode is a lot of fun. Meanwhile Monkey Fight and Monkey Race are the only two mini games included, and both are pretty awful. Th...

A stellar action puzzle hybrid with tight controls, Monkey Ball 3D is the best Monkey Ball game since the original, and Sega's found some cool ways to implement the system’s 3D functionality and make it relevant to the gameplay. Though it has some big...

Early adopters of the Nintendo 3DS will no doubt be looking for software to show off their new system. Super Monkey Ball 3D is one of those games that straddles the line between a "game to own" and a "game to show off." In 3D, it looks good, and with t...
