Los leones son los felinos más grandes de África. Su pelaje suele ser de color beis y los machos adultos tienen una melena oscura.
Los leones recorren la sabana africana en manadas compuestas por hembras emparentadas entre sí, sus crías y un único macho. Cuando un macho llega a la edad adulta es expulsado de la manada y tiene que buscarse su propio grupo. Las leonas cazan en equipo. Juntas pueden atrapar grandes presas como cebras, búfalos, jirafas, hipopótamos e incluso crías de elefante, pero tampoco le hacen ascos a los restos de la comida de otros animales. Los leones duermen hasta veinte horas al día y tanto los machos como las hembras defienden a su manada frente al ataque de intrusos. El rugido de un león es muy fuerte y puede oírse hasta a ocho kilómetros de distancia. Los leones rugen para comunicarse entre sí y asustar a los intrusos. Los machos y las hembras tienen un pelaje de color marrón claro. Los machos tienen largas y abundantes melenas de color marrón que a lo largo de su vida se vuelven más largas y oscuras. - Anécdota : Los leones viven en manadas que son lideradas por un macho fuerte.
